When you use the device in AccessPoint Mode, you are turning the device into a wireless switch/hub – that is, the device is handling handles ethernet packets but knows nothing about TCP/IP (IPv4/IPv6) – it simply transmits data to your router, which will see the data exactly as if it were a switch .
In Router Mode, each ethernet packet is inspected and moved between interfaces based on the packet’s contents – i.e. moving traffic between LAN interfaces and WAN based on source and destination IP addresses.
To use Router Mode and AccessPoint Mode connect the signal wire as instructed above.
